You don’t need many tools at all. You will want a hammer (if nailing down the carpet gripper), gripper shears to cut the gripper, a carpet knife to cut the underlay and the carpet (plus knife blades), a tape measure, a knee kicker to stretch the carpet over the carpet gripper, and if you really want to make your life easy a Speedcatt to tuck the carpet into the gripper. You can also make trimming the carpet easier by using the Trim Master tool.
Assuming that you are stretch fitting your carpet, you will need carpet gripper (we recommend Gripperrods), adhesive (only if the carpet gripper is glued down) and underlay tape to tape the pieces of underlay together. It is a good idea to lay paper felt on the floor first to help cut down on draughts and to stop the underlay from sticking to the floor.
If you are gluing down your carpet, you will need an adhesive to glue the carpet to the underlay (single stick) and to glue the underlay to the floor (double stick).
The best thing about a self-installation of underlay is that it does not require lots of specialist accessories, and it is relatively straightforward. In our help and advice section you will see a guide of the installation process as well as a list of the tools you need for the job. Underlay Accessories are rarely sold by the large high street carpet and laminate retailers as they prefer to offer a package which includes the carpet or laminate, the delivery, the accessories, the underlay, and the fitting. If they do, they are often highly priced to subsidise the cheap cost of the carpet or laminate and encourage you to use their fitting services. Here at AllAboutUnderlay.co.uk we can deliver those accessories fast to your door at trade prices.
